How to Boost Creativity When You're Stuck in a Rut

Have you ever been stuck in a photography rut? You may look at your work and realize while it’s beautiful work, it’s not very inspiring. I’ve been there so I know it can be challenging to spark creativity when you’re in a creative rut. It's a journey that involves stepping beyond the familiar, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and nurturing your artistic soul. Here are some tried-and-true tips on how to boost creativity in your photography journey.

1. Work Outside the Norm

When it comes to figuring out how to boost your creativity, consider working outside the scope of your usual projects. Delve into genres or styles that challenge your skills and ignite fresh perspectives. If you normally do family photography, consider doing landscape, wedding, or food photography. Find something outside your normal scope that inspires you. The act of pushing boundaries and exploring new territories can unlock doors to innovative ideas and techniques that you might not have discovered within your comfort zone.

2. Take Time to Rest

Creativity thrives in a rested mind. It's perfectly okay to step away from your camera when you feel the need for a break. Adequate rest and downtime can do wonders for your creativity. Take moments to recharge, do activities unrelated to photography, and return with a rejuvenated spirit ready to capture the world through a fresh lens.

3. Seek Inspiration Beyond Your Industry

To boost creativity, look beyond your own industry. Draw inspiration from diverse sources like architecture, fashion, or even nature. I find inspiration in architecture so I love exploring the design of the buildings around me. I also find inspiration in magazines like Vogue where I can see high-end fashion and get inspiration from some of the best designers in the world. Exploring areas beyond photography sparks new ideas, enriching your creative reservoir with unique concepts and styles.

4. Find Passion Projects

Passion projects are a powerful tool for boosting creativity. Invest time in projects that align with your personal interests, even if they diverge from your typical work. For instance, I worked on The Body Project which provided inspiration for my other work. I also enjoyed doing the black and white portrait project to challenge myself to see beyond the colors I normally work with. These projects, though different from my regular portfolio, infused a renewed passion and energy into my creative process.

5. Define Your Creative Direction

Consider what creative direction you want to pursue and what you want to be known for. Focusing your efforts in a specific direction allows you to channel your creativity with purpose and clarity. Whether it's a particular genre or a unique approach, honing in on your creative direction can elevate your work and make it distinctly yours.

When it comes to figuring out how to boost creativity as a photographer, it’s all about embracing diversity, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and nurturing your creative spirit.
